Indoor plants for the smallest of spaces

Go for succulents and cactii! They come in dozens of shapes and sizes and will grow in the smallest of spaces. In our cafe at Chez Theophile in Nyon, we have cacti in egg cups, and tiny coffee cups as well as succulents in lanterns and terrines. If you have space for a cup, there’s space for a plant!

I also love tumbling plants indoors, like pothos, also called Epipremnum aureum, as they’re very easy and can either be trained to tumble off a book case or grow up a support. They prefer bright but indirect light and will tolerate both shade and artificial light. Let the soil dry out between waterings and they will be very happy! My other favourite tumbler is a spider plant, which if they are happy will sprawl off their pots, flowering and making little clones of themselves. They may be old fashioned but they are very easy, and take up very little space.

Chinese money plants, or Pilea peperomioides are easy to grow and even easier to propagate than spider plants, producing pups at the base of the plant that can then be potted up into miniature plants to give away, hence the name of the “pass it along” plant.

If you can’t fit a regular Swiss cheese plant into your apartment, how about a Monstera minima? It’s really a Rhaphidophora tetrasperma, not a Monstera deliciosa, but I wouldn’t let that put you off - it looks just like a miniature Swiss cheese plant, with smaller, neater leaves and a more compact habit, reaching 1m50 as a fully grown adult, rather than the usual 2 to 5m tall.
